The Gypsy Girl

Amidst the bitter monotony of life
The hustle-bustle of the same city,
My heart silently yearns for freedom
To be liberated like the eastern wind;
I long to abandon all worldly strings
And live as a gypsy.

The snow-capped mountains summon me at dawn
My feet tickles to walk over the mustard fields,
Rains of faraway land sings me a lullaby
They tell me to merge tenderly with Nature;
I cry for a chance in life
To live as a gypsy.

I wish to go for long treks in the day
Jot down my experiences in a tent at night,
Learn great lessons, meet instrumental people
Make Life my teacher and Nature my guide;
I yearn to spread my wings
Hear them call me the  gypsy girl.

No emotional baggage, no attachment
Only living life in the present moment,
Dancing in the hills gracefully
Singing with the waves gleefully;
That's what I want to be
A bohemian, a gypsy girl!

  1. Sounds quite romantic, this dream of freedom! I know actual gypsys moved because they were not welcome to stay, but I feel the freedom you speak of differently, as if your speaker could be a wood nymph or a free spirit in a world outside of cities and all they bring. What a fine dream.

    1. Exactly Susan. The freedom I talk here is of being a free spirit, who is not chained to any materialistic and emotional possessions.
      Thank you so much. And your poem just made my day. It was so beautiful :)

    Only living life in the present moment,

    I so admire your definition of freedom! We are all bound with our responsibilities.. we yearn to let go and be free.. to frolic like a "Bohemian gypsy girl." Beautifully executed :D

    Lots of love,

  9. Oh, this is lovely. There is a sort of romanticism about gypsies, because I think it is inherent in the human soul to be nomadic. I love the bohemian spirit here that makes my beautiful morning so so colorful 😊

  13. Mmmmmmmmmmm......gorgeous lines - I once went out with a Roma gypsy girl for a long while in Eastern Hungary, in Europe. I write that now because I recognised her in your lines. She did travel barefoot, especially for walks in the fields, and did have a sense of romanticm and freedom that was different. Even though she spoke no English and I very little rom, we shared that joy I felt again in those words of yours.

  34. The image of the gypsy girl roaming free is very apt! For centuries people have looked down on the gypsies, I think because of this sense of joyful existence and freedom that their culture exudes. Well written!

    Speaking of the Gypsies and their potrayal in Hollywwod flix has always been in a negative light, The major reason being they trace their history to India,
    present day Haryana Northern Rajasthan region.

    Mnay of the gypsies have still not forgetten their PAGAN ( read as Hindu ) roots.

    Plan a trek with your friends to Himachal,
    Dharmashala
    Kasol ,, Parvati Valley
    Kheer Ganga ... Tosh Valley
    Rekong peo
    Manali
    Rohtang Pass

    Remember these place fondly and the journey vividly.

    If you are of the Partying kind then Tosh is the place for you.

    If inclined towards religion/spirituality there are are many temples from the MahaBharata era i.e. 4000 BC.

    I love the Himachali headgear.

    THe Song " I want to Break free" would be apt too.

    Aditya.
